Boxcars was originally written for a 1981 performance at Bennington College, Vermont, where Maurice Pachman and I gave the premiere performance and where I was named the 1981 Theodore H. Presser Scholar. Doodles is a fun movement where the bassoonists weave lines around each other; Sailor's Lament is a personal movement written in memory of my late father; Paces is a moment of decision making with some confusion; Home-Free-All is a quick memory of a summer game of Hide and Seek. The title Boxcars refers to the C-119 Flying Boxcars that I gazed up at as they approached a local airfield on Long Island, New York, during the 1950's. I hand-engraved the score and parts in 1988 using Keuffel and Esser pen and ink templates. For intermediate to advanced players.-EJH View Sheet Music Samples 1. Doodles 2. Sailor's Lament 3. Paces 4.
