Part of the Yeni Makam Series of new works based on Turkish classical and folk music. Yeni Makam 1 explores ancient Turkish microtonal modes in contemporary western structures. Taksim is the improvisation of a shepherd playing a ney (end-blown cane flute); Bogaziçi Aksami is a reflection of an evening on the Bosporus, sitting in a Turkish cafe, watching the Russian, Rumanian and Turkish ships steam by; Segah Gibi is a gentle song in the Segah makam with its microtonally lowered tonic; Çift Soz (double-talk) features a ritornello by the eighteenth century Turkish composer Dede Efendi. Yeni Makam 1 is an unusual work which brings a world music sound to the concert hall and which will please both audience and performer. For advanced players.
