The drawings in this program are portraits of Beethoven created by my students at 3 rural schools in Franklin County, Massachusetts.

Every 5 years my music students participate in an in-depth study of Beethoven. They listen to Beethoven's music with the goal of hearing selections from all 9 symphonies.

One of the favorite activities is when 7 and 8 year old children draw Beethoven's portrait, based on the 1818 charcoal sketch by August von Kloeber. This show presents work from the 2001 and 2006 units; note how many of the children captured the mood of the original portrait.

In recognition of Turkish music as an inspiration for composers of the past and present, I have selected Beethoven's Six Variations on a Turkish March, op.76 as background music for this show.-EJH
