Every fall is devoted to an in-depth study of different musical masters in my elementary general music classes. We spend up to 10 weeks focusing on the life and music of well known artists such as Scott Joplin, Stravinsky, George Gershwin and Mozart.
Every five years is the Beethoven unit. All children k-6 hear the nine symphonies and through related activities unlock the mystery behind this rare genius.
One of the favorite activites is when 7 & 8 year old children draw Beethoven's portrait, based on the 1818 charcoal sketch by Kloeber. The slide show below presents work from the 2001 and 2006 units; note how many of the children captured the mood of the original portrait. -Edward J Hines, April 2008 |
