Turkish Songs for Childrens Chorus and Orchestra was conceived during 1986 while I was living in Istanbul, next door to a primary school. The natural, musical rhythms of the Turkish language plus the daily cries of children playing outdoors inspired the idea of creating an original song cycle based on Turkish nursery rhymes. The work was composed in 1991, revised in 1998 and is designed for children ages 10-16.
Turkish Songs for Childrens Chorus and Orchestra is in 5 short movements and is approximately 12 minutes long. The cymbals and tambourine open the Introduction with a familiar rhythm from Turkish military bands (mehter) of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. This rhythm is repeated throughout the rest of the work. The recorders enter with the main theme, later picked up by the flutes and then the rest of the orchestra. After a quick crescendo, the theme disappears and we are left with only solo timpani. Movement 2- Bir Iki Uç (One Two Three) is a fun counting song. Movement 3- Kis Baba (Father Winter) is written in the Turkish Huzzam makam (mode), and captures the stillness of a snowy winter morning. Movement 4-Onki Donki is an energetic nonsense song in two parts, which kids love singing. The final movement Anne (pronounced Ah-nay), is a song for mother, from a poem by the Turkish poet F. Husnu Daglarca. The recorder parts are written together with the chorus, so that the recorders can be played by the chorus, if desired.
Turkish Songs for Childrens Chorus and Orchestra is an ideal work for orchestra and young chorus. It can be performed with chorus and full live orchestra or chorus with a special pre-recorded orchestra on CD. For easy learning of the music and pronunciation, the rehearsal/performance CD includes a vocal demonstration of the music (as well as a version with orchestra alone) and phrase by phrase drills of the text for rehearsal.
