Yeni Makam 4 Duo for Clarinet and Percussion Four Movements Composed by Edward J Hines Sheet Music PDF E-Music Download CD MP3 Audio Download 1. Taksim (Improvisation) 2. Bir Karpuzmus (It was a Watermelon) 3. Harem Havasi (Harem Song) 4. Dan Dun Davulu (The 'High-Low' Sound of the Bass Drum). Composed in 1994, Yeni Makam 4 for clarinet and percussion duo is a challenging, yet highly satisfying chamber music work which explores traditional Middle Eastern rhythms and microtonal modes, known as makam (maqamat). Scored for clarinet and tambourine (def), frame drum (bandur) and small bass drum (davul), Yeni Makam 4 bridges the ancient musical practices of the Middle East with the contemporary demands of Western chamber music. Yeni Makam 4 weaves through different moods in four movements including: Taksim (Improvisation) a mystical entrance; Bir Karpuzmus (It was a Watermelon) a lively movement for clarinet and tambourine based on the traditional Turkish folk song Karpuz Kestim (I Cut a Watermelon), and using traditional Middle Eastern style of tambourine performance; Harem Havasi (Harem Song) written in the Saba makam with the traditional Duyek usul (rhythmic mode) on frame drum; Dan Dun Davulu (The 'High-Low' Sound of the Bass Drum), a fast moving and exciting exploration of asymmetrical rhythms of the Black Sea Coast of Turkey. |
