Çoban Havasi
Solo Violin & Hand Drum One Movement
Arranged by Edward J Hines
PDF E-Music Download
A transcription and new arrangement of an old Turkish folk melody, Çoban Havasi (pronounced Cho-ban Ha-vah-suh) is a freely moving song of joy and the inner peace of simple life. In performance, the work creates a pastoral mood where the violinist is like a distant shepherd, instrument in-hand, playing for the satisfaction of oneself--and the flock. The work features a wonderful, upbeat dance section at the coda, where the performer has the option to include a simple drum accompaniment. Çoban Havasi is available in a quick-download PDF file format.

1. Come live with me and be my love,
And we all the pleasures prove
That valleys, groves, hills, and fields,
Woods, or steepy mountain yields.
|
2. And we will sit upon the rocks,
Seeing the shepherds feed their flocks,
By shallow rivers to whose falls
Melodious birds sing madrigals.
|
3. And I will make thee beds of roses
And a thousand fragrant posies,
A cap of flowers, and a kirtle
Embroidered all with leaves of myrtle;
|
4. A gown made of the finest wool
Which from our pretty lambs we pull;
Fair lined slippers for the cold,
With buckles of the purest gold;
|
5. A belt of straw and ivy buds
With coral clasps and amber studs:
And if these pleasures may thee move,
Come live with me and be my love.
|
6. The shepherds' swains shall dance and sing
For thy delight each May morning:
If these delights thy mind may move,
Then live with me and be my love.
Christopher Marlowe (1564-1593)
