The Saba makam is one of the oldest and most characteristic modes of both Turkish and Arabic music. The gentle, heartfelt quality of the microtonal quarter tones in Saba express feelings that are unfamiliar in tempered Western musical compositions. The Saba makam is heard in classical Arabic works, in Turkish classical music from the Ottoman era, as well as in the daily Call-to-Prayer at mosques throughout the Islamic world.
Composed in 1995, Yeni Makam 3 is a personal musical statement which explores the spiritual world of the Saba makam through the voice of the cello. Yeni Makam 3 brings ancient modal thinking together with contemporary lyricism to create a unique and heartfelt musical experience. An excellent work for advanced players who wish to add a world music sound to a recital or chamber music concert. Part of the Yeni Makam Series of works based on Middle Eastern modes and rhythms.
