ALBUM DESCRIPTION An American in Istanbul, a classical music recording of The Yeni Makam Series (New Modes) by composer Edward J Hines, is a series of chamber works based on Middle Eastern folk and classical music. This unusual synthesis of Middle Eastern and Western music reflects Hines' decades of research in Middle Eastern music. Yeni Makam are composed using ancient Turkish and Arabic modes called makams. Makams are based on the same Pythagorean principles of construction as Western modes and scales. Makams, however, are Middle Eastern in concept and predate equal temperament; thus makams reflect ancient theory and intonation.
